Untitled, 1995. From the series, Asser Levy.

In 1995, I started photographing with the 8×10 camera. As a self assignment, I went to the nearby Asser Levy public swimming pool (on 23rd Street and the East River in Manhattan). Since I didn’t have permission to photograph inside the pool area, I slipped my lens through the bars of the fence, asked people for permission and successfully made a couple of formal portraits of bathers. When I saw the results I was in love. I printed those portraits and wrote a letter to the NYC parks dept to obtain permission to photograph. They granted me permission to photograph the last two weeks of August 1995. You can see more in the “Series” section of gregmiller.com.
