Photographing with Purpose
September 20 2017 - September 24 2017
Los Angeles Center of Photography, 1515 Wilcox Ave., Los Angeles, California, 90028
Do fears around photographing people stop you from making the pictures you want? Do you have lots of ideas for documentary portrait projects that never seem to get off the ground? When you do get up the courage to approach a person, does anything stand in the way of fully realizing your vision?
Greg Miller’s unique teaching method works to connect your purpose with daily picture making while giving you the technical tools you need to make those photographs. Through in-class assignments, critiques and shooting demos, Greg guides students to find what is most important to them at this moment in time and discusses strategies for making pictures happen on a regular basis by overcoming common fears.
Students will focus on portraiture and its context within historical and contemporary photography. We will begin by looking at student work as well as exploring the work of current and historical photographers. The class will embark on locations within or around Los Angeles Saturday afternoon and into the night and again early Sunday morning. In general, students are encouraged to photograph people wherever they find them: on the street, friends, models or family, but a portion of class will deal directly with the fear of talking to strangers. By exploring this aspect, students can strengthen their ability to communicate photographic intention.
Students will share their images from the weekend on Sunday afternoon, collectively editing down one another’s images into a final body of work. Topics that will be discussed are mechanics of creating a better environmental portrait, the ethics of documentary work, model consent forms and conquering fears of strangers to get the picture you want. This weekend-intensive workshop can serve as a launching point for a new project or solidify your already established one. Any digital format from mobile camera to medium format DSLR is welcome.
