UNTO DUST
I have been photographing Ash Wednesday on this one day in midtown Manhattan every year since 1997. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent in the Catholic and other liturgical calendars, and is meant to remind the faithful of their mortality, the inevitability of sin and the possibility of forgiveness.
The beauty of Ash Wednesday in New York is that very ordinary people heading to the train, to work or to school, exercise the simple act of wearing their faith publicly and collectively this one day a year.
It is about seeing the varying degrees of faith and the very old ritual set against the backdrop of modern society.
